The Classic Provence Summer Flowers and Scenic Summits is a one week trip with a day off from hiking mid-week. Our hikes will be very varied, taking us through olive groves, around vineyards, to high viewpoints and charming villages. We'll enjoy the abundant Provençal flora and have amazing views of far away vistas, castles, lavender fields and deep gorges where vultures glide by. A day off mid-week offers the chance to visit nearby historical sites, a local market, and then maybe to enjoy a bike ride of an exciting via ferrata excursion. Or maybe just to chill out and rest in the sunshine sipping local rosé.

Gorgeous Provence is also one week, this time all hiking, in the southern region of Provence, beginning not far from the Côte d'Azur then heading inland to explore the spectacular Verdon Gorge. Very comfortable accommodation, offering traditional Provençal fare, will complete this exciting trip.

Hidden Provence takes us further north to a beautiful area of forests, farming villages, castles and mountains. This is a week of very varied spectacular walking in wild and remote scenery. However, we will also take the time to sample all that is good about Provence, from the wine and olive oil to the historical villages of the Saou region to Provençal markets to the lavender culture out towards the Rhône Valley.

“Wonderful walking area – wooded hills and fantastic rock formations. Amazing variety. Provençal villages just as one imagined they would be”. Jen

“Thank you so much for a wonderful week in Provence.  We had a great time: the walks, the wildlife, the flowers, the food, the company ....... it was all brilliant” Bel

Accommodation
This holiday will normally be based at the Hotel St Marc in the medieval village of Mollans sur Ouvèze
This village is in the heart of northern Provence, in the Drôme Baronnies, one of the most wild and scenic areas of France, known for its lavender fields, olive grove and vineyards. The village is nestled among verdant hillsides and rocky river beds, very close to Mont Ventoux. It is ideally situated for our walks.

“The hotel was outstanding” John

The hotel has a reputation for its fine Provençal cuisine, and for my groups they provide a wonderful “randonneur”s” menu of local specialities.

Classic Provence sample programme:

Day 1: We’ll walk out from the hotel to explore the local hills and villages, with lovely views. This is a nice gentle introduction to Provence walking.

Day 2: Then we’ll take a drive over to the St May Gorge where the River Eygue has gouged its route through impressive orange and grey cliffs. This is where the Griffin vultures have been reintroduced and our interesting walk will take us up an improbable route to the top of the Rocher du Caire for some full-on vulture watching.

Day 3: A fabulous circuit route around and through the spectacular Dentelles de Montmirail, where the limestone cliffs soar up from the surrounding vineyards in huge smooth spires. As well as being a hiker’s and climber’s paradise, the Dentelles are also a natural flower garden with many different species enjoying the sun baked limestone terraces. Gigondas will be our start and finish point, known for its wine domains.

Day 4: We’ll take a break from hiking and maybe go and visit the Roman ruins of Vaison la Romaine, France’s largest architectural site, or we'll spend the morning in the charming small town of Buis les Baronnies, exploring its tiny old streets and the weekly Provençal market. After a café lunch, those who wish can rent bikes and take a ride around the surrounding countryside through nearby villages or along the river. A half day summit hike is also an option. For those who are looking for some exciting adventure the jaw dropping via ferrata along the St Julien cliff is also on offer.

Day 5: Another great local hike, taking in a summit with panoramic views.

Day 6: Time to ascend Mont Ventoux by a pleasant summit trail.

“Great week in Provence, culminating in a summit ascent of Mont Ventoux ; wonderful hotel with very friendly staff and gourmet meals” Tim

Custom made holidays are available if you hire me privately. From one day to a week, I will be very happy to show you some of the best wild places of Provence, at whatever hiking level you like, from gentle valley strolls to full on summit scampers! From 1 - 8 people.

Where do we stay?
My trips are based in friendly and traditional Provençal hotels which offer a showcase for local products and Provençal specialities.

The food is genuine Provence cuisine, which is hugely varied, based largely on local and seasonal ingredients. Presentation is very important in Provence.

Those who enjoy their wine will not be disappointed; this region boasts some of the most prestigious wines of France. If you wish, a wine tasting visit can be incorporated into a trip.
